Key Takeaways
  • The future next-generation aircraft carrier (PANG), named ‘France Libre’, is scheduled to enter service by 2038.
  • The French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA) is leading this major project, which brings together key industrial players in the sector.
  • The construction project mobilises Naval Group, Chantiers de l’Atlantique, TechnicAtome and nearly 800 subcontractors.
  • The major challenge lies in the global integration of proven technologies to ensure French sovereignty and naval aviation superiority.

A strategic turning point for 2038

The French Navy is actively preparing its transition to the next generation of naval sovereignty. The future next-generation aircraft carrier (PANG), named ‘France Libre’, is designed to become the cornerstone of French power projection by 2038. This highly technological vessel will be tasked with guaranteeing France’s strategic autonomy and its naval aviation superiority in a constantly changing geopolitical context. To meet modern requirements, the vessel’s design is based on three fundamental pillars: mass, permanence at sea, and resilience against threats. Designed to operate within a collaborative and interconnected combat network, the ‘France Libre’ will ensure the country’s capacity for autonomous action is maintained for decades to come.

An industrial alliance under the aegis of the DGA

The management of this exceptionally complex programme has been entrusted to the French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA). The DGA is overseeing all development and construction phases, uniting the crown jewels of the French defence and shipbuilding industries under its leadership. The consortium brings together leading key players such as Naval Group, Chantiers de l’Atlantique, and TechnicAtome. This industrial core is working with a network of around 800 subcontractors to successfully complete this extraordinary project. This rigorous organisation aims to unite highly diverse expertise around a common defence objective, whilst preserving France’s industrial sovereignty.

The technical challenge of global integration

Unlike other groundbreaking projects, the main difficulty of this future aircraft carrier does not lie in developing entirely new technologies. The various systems and propulsion methods envisaged rely on scientific and industrial skills already proven by French engineers. The real technical challenge consists of optimally integrating all these complex technologies within a single platform. Ensuring the perfect coherence of combat systems, propulsion, and aviation management is the cornerstone of this project. Adhering to a particularly strict delivery schedule represents the other major challenge of this human and technological venture.
