A new large-scale cyberattack against the State
The « Zéro logement vacant » website, a digital portal of the State managed by the Ministry of Cities and Housing, was inaccessible this Sunday following a major security breach. The cybercriminal group known as ZeroBytes has officially claimed responsibility for compromising this public platform, originally designed to help local authorities identify and mobilise unoccupied housing. The hackers claim to have seized nearly 149 million raw records from the service’s databases. Although this large volume may contain many duplicates, the incident raises serious concerns about the protection of government digital platforms.
Property owners’ information exposed
The files stolen by the attackers reportedly contain particularly precise information relating to users of the public service. According to analysis shared by the specialised platform French Breaches, the stolen data includes the identities of owners, including their surnames, first names, and dates of birth. Geographical contact details, such as postal addresses as well as various identifiers associated with the properties, are also among the stolen data. This massive leak potentially exposes the citizens concerned to targeted phishing campaigns or identity theft, while the authorities have not yet detailed the security measures undertaken.
Repeat offence by the ZeroBytes collective
This digital offensive is not an isolated incident for this hacking group, which had already made a name for itself over the summer with a national-scale intrusion. Indeed, ZeroBytes is the collective behind a vast data leak that affected the General Directorate of Public Finances (DGFiP) during the months of June and July. This previous cyberattack against the tax administration compromised the data of more than 678,000 taxpayers, both individuals and professionals. With this new operation against the Ministry of Housing, the hackers confirm their systematic targeting of French state infrastructure and the personal asset data of citizens.
