Devastating tornado sweeps through the Aude

Last Monday, 24 August, at around 5:20 pm, the commune of Pomas, located in the Limouxin region, was hit by a rare and violent weather phenomenon. In the space of a few minutes, a tornado swept through this village in the Aude, causing significant material damage. In total, around a hundred homes were completely destroyed and as many suffered major damage, leaving many residents destitute. Although the human toll stands at twenty injured, including two in critical condition, fortunately no deaths have been reported following this disaster. Emergency services were quickly deployed to care for the victims and secure the affected areas.
Resident trapped under the ruins of her home
Among the most critical emergency situations, the fate of a young woman six months pregnant sparked strong emotions. Named Justine, she found herself trapped inside her house as the structure collapsed under the force of the winds. Upon arriving at the scene, her partner Alexis discovered a home in ruins and quickly located the victim thanks to her cries for help. The young woman remained buried for nearly an hour and a half under a mass of rubble estimated at 300 kilograms, consisting of roofing elements and sections of brick walls. Despite the pain and breathing difficulties expressed by his partner, her companion maintained contact to support her while waiting for help to arrive.
Successful rescue by firefighters
The coordinated intervention of the firefighters allowed the victim to be extracted from her perilous situation. Rescuers had to proceed with infinite caution to clear Justine through a window of the devastated home. Transported to the nearest hospital, the mother-to-be underwent thorough examinations. Against all odds, doctors found only minor bruising and no fractures, describing the patient as a true « miracle survivor ». The child she is carrying also survived the ordeal unscathed, much to the relief of her family.
