Key Points
  • Iran has launched drone and missile attacks against bases housing US forces in the United Arab Emirates and Jordan.
  • Jordan states it shot down eight missiles, and the United Arab Emirates denounces a “dangerous escalation” after intercepting a drone.
  • Tehran claims self-defence following United States strikes on Larak Island and reports two maritime incidents in the Strait of Hormuz.

Retaliatory attacks against US facilities

In response to strikes carried out on Sunday by the United States against the Iranian island of Larak · the first in a month · Tehran conducted targeted attacks overnight from Sunday to Monday. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed to have targeted US military targets in Jordan as well as in the United Arab Emirates. According to Iranian authorities, the Al Minhad base in the UAE, where Washington’s troops are stationed, was targeted by dozens of attack drones. For its part, the Jordanian military announced it had successfully intercepted and destroyed eight missiles that entered its airspace. In parallel, Iran reports a supertanker disabled by a fire after hitting mines in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as the seizure of a bulk carrier accused of discharging oil there.

A sharp rise in security tensions in the region

Iran declared it had acted in “self-defence” in the face of what it describes as US military aggression. The United Arab Emirates strongly condemned the drone attack over its territorial waters, calling it a “dangerous escalation” and reserving its right to respond. These clashes come after the US military justified its recent bombardments on Larak Island by the presence of Iranian forces preparing to lay naval mines in the shipping lanes of the Strait of Hormuz. This direct escalation of hostilities raises fears of a wider conflict in the region.
