According to his analysis, a lack of cohesion and split votes would pose an insurmountable obstacle to reaching the second round. Laurent Wauquiez used this gathering to warn his allies of the damaging consequences that another fragmentation of the conservative electorate would bring. For him, unity is not an option, but a condition for electoral survival against the left and far-right blocs.
The primary as a tool for legitimacy
To achieve this unity, the MP is banking on a structured selection process. He defended the principle of a primary, which he described as the least imperfect solution to bring together the different sensibilities of the right. This position comes as debates over the selection method rage within his camp, with some fearing the internal wounds left by previous experiences. Faced with these reservations, he presents two scenarios: a collectively defined set of rules or a « wild primary » dictated by opinion polls. The former president of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region prefers an organised consultation over a competition decided solely by the volatility of voting intentions. Without naming a favourite, he called on his supporters to work towards building this programmatic and human unity.
Rural areas at the heart of territorial reconquest
Beyond party strategy, Laurent Wauquiez outlined the contours of his political project, focused on repairing the « territorial divide ». He regrets that this issue is absent from national debates when, in his view, it lies at the heart of France’s malaise. The stakes are high: it is about contesting rural and peri-urban areas with Marine Le Pen, who achieves high scores there. The diagnosis made by the Haute-Loire MP puts the defence of rural life at the centre of a strategy aimed at reconciling the different components of the nation. He believes that the right can only find the path to victory by speaking directly to these territories that feel neglected by central public policies.

An offensive against the radical poles
The speech was also marked by direct criticism of the two main opponents identified by Laurent Wauquiez: France Unbowed and the National Rally. He spoke at length, depicting Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s project as a threat to national unity, evoking a vision of France that he considers too focused on taxation and communitarianism. In a bid to triangulate, he dismissed both extremes, calling them the direct beneficiaries of the country’s divisions. This reaching out for the unity of the right-wing bloc is accompanied by a fierce denunciation of the political models promoted by the most radical fringes of the assembly. For the MP, only a « hardline » right-wing programme would make it possible to oust his rivals in the first round of the election.
