This imposing structure, over five metres high, was erected in direct response to a US presidential executive order signed two days earlier. On Thursday, 27 August, Donald Trump ordered all US federal agencies to replace the historic name of Lake Ontario with « Lake America » in all their official documents, maps, and contracts.
Limited repercussions amid a trade crisis
In legal terms, the American measure remains confined within the borders of the federal administration in Washington and does not affect Canadian sovereignty or cartography. However, it illustrates the deep freeze in diplomatic relations between the two North American neighbours, currently locked in a major tariff dispute following the failure of trade negotiations. While Ottawa denounces a decision that denies the centuries-old history of this name of Indigenous origin, provincial authorities claim to have received support from several US governors determined to ignore the presidential directive.
